Learn how context hints inform ad relevance, write specific and accurate examples for Pakistan, and understand why they are not keywords, audience rules or delivery controls. The guide helps turn a customer need into useful context while checking that each example fits the offer and landing page.

The short version

Context hints give Ads Manager useful details about your offer so its systems can assess when an ad may be relevant in ChatGPT. They sit at the ad-group level. They are not keywords, audience rules or delivery instructions, and they cannot guarantee where an ad will appear.

What makes a useful hint

Ask: What else should the system know about this product or service, who might it help, or when might it be useful? A hint can describe one of those angles; every hint does not need to cover all three. Write one clear, natural phrase focused on one idea rather than a list of disconnected search terms.

  • Additional: Adds context beyond what is already clear from the ad or landing page. A detail can still help when it connects a feature to a customer need.
  • Specific: Names a concrete feature, service detail, customer need or situation rather than only a broad category.
  • Relevant: Describes a genuine fit between the offering and its use case.
  • Accurate: Reflects what the business actually provides; update hints when features, prices, promotions, availability or service areas change.

“Running shoes” is broad. “Cushioned running shoes for beginners training for a first 5K” adds useful product and customer context. This is an illustration, not a promise about delivery. Read OpenAI’s current context-hint guidance.

Hints are not keywords or targeting controls

Keywords are search terms. A context hint gives the system background about an offering and its relevance; people do not have to use the exact words in the hint for an underlying need or situation to be relevant.

Hints also cannot restrict delivery. “Solar installation available in Lahore” describes a service area. “Show this ad only to people in Lahore” is an instruction that hints cannot enforce. They do not guarantee delivery for particular conversations or audiences, or enforce geographic limits, schedules or exclusions. Use supported campaign controls for delivery settings where available. See the Ads Manager guide.

Custom audiences are a separate control based on an advertiser’s own eligible customer or prospect list. A hint does not identify, include or exclude an individual. Read the custom-audiences guide for current eligibility and data-use requirements.

Keep hints focused on the ad group

An ad group should organize ads around a shared product, service, theme or customer need. Its hints should describe that shared focus. If two use cases need different messaging or landing pages, consider separate ad groups. OpenAI’s example is a plumbing business splitting emergency repairs from preventive maintenance. See OpenAI’s ad-group guidance.

There is no fixed hint count in the current OpenAI writing guidance. Start with genuine, distinct information that explains the ad group. Remove repetitions and claims that are no longer true.

Illustrative examples for Pakistan

Adapt these only if each detail is accurate for your business. A location, feature or service promise belongs in a hint only when the advertiser can substantiate it.

A simple writing process

  1. Pick one product, service or customer need for the ad group.
  2. List real details that distinguish the offer: features, availability, process or service area.
  3. Add a customer circumstance only when it genuinely fits.
  4. Write one natural phrase about one idea. It may describe what you offer, who it helps or when it may be useful.
  5. Check that it is additional, specific, relevant and accurate.
  6. Compare it with the ad and landing page, then correct any mismatch before launch.
  7. Update it when the underlying business facts change.

Common mistakes

  • Copying keyword lists or writing repeated near-duplicates instead of useful business context.
  • Using only a generic category name such as “HR software” without explaining a concrete feature or use case.
  • Writing an instruction such as “only show this at night” or “exclude small businesses.”
  • Combining unrelated offers that need different messaging or landing pages in one ad group.
  • Adding unverified claims about pricing, service areas, delivery times, warranties or product features.
  • Leaving old promotions or discontinued services in place.
  • Editing hints from a stale bulk file. A bulk edit replaces the full hint value; export the current set and upload the complete intended list. See the bulk-upload guide.

Quick answers

Are context hints keywords?

No. They add business and offer context to help systems assess relevance; they are not exact-match search terms.

Can a hint limit ads to Karachi or Islamabad?

No. A location in a hint is descriptive context. Use supported campaign location controls to set where a campaign is eligible to run.

Where do I add context hints?

At the ad-group level in Ads Manager. Check the current interface because labels and options can change.

Does every hint need to cover who, what and when?

No. OpenAI says to describe what you offer, who it helps, or when it may be useful; each hint does not need to cover all three.

How many hints should I add?

OpenAI’s current guidance does not prescribe a fixed number. Use distinct, accurate context without repeating the same idea.

Do hints guarantee impressions or affect my bid?

No. Hints inform relevance, but they are not delivery guarantees or a substitute for supported campaign and bidding settings.
