The short version
OpenAI Ads Manager uses familiar advertising language alongside terms specific to ChatGPT Ads. This glossary explains the core concepts in the order you will encounter them: account structure, campaign goals, relevance and bidding, measurement, and budgets. It is a starting reference, not a substitute for the options and rules shown in your account.
Account and campaign structure
| Term | Plain-English meaning |
|---|---|
| Ads Manager Beta | OpenAI’s platform for creating, launching and managing ChatGPT Ads campaigns. OpenAI describes it as a beta product that continues to evolve. |
| Campaign | The top-level plan for a business goal. It holds settings such as an objective, budget, dates and eligible locations. |
| Ad group | A group within a campaign that organises ads around a shared product, service or customer need. Some bidding and context settings sit at this level. |
| Ad | The paid creative a person may see, including advertiser identity, headline, description, image and destination. |
| Landing page | The website destination linked from an ad. It should be accessible and match the offer described in the creative. |
Goals and delivery
| Term | Plain-English meaning |
|---|---|
| Campaign objective | The campaign’s chosen goal. Current OpenAI documentation lists Views, Clicks and Conversions; the choice affects how delivery is optimized and billed. |
| Views (CPM) | A visibility-focused option billed per thousand impressions served. |
| Clicks (CPC) | A traffic-focused option billed per valid click. |
| Conversions | An objective that optimizes delivery toward one supported conversion event. Billing can be by valid clicks or impressions; it is not a charge per conversion. |
| Context hint | Natural-language information at ad-group level that explains what an offer is, who it helps or when it may be relevant. It is not an exact-match keyword, targeting rule or delivery guarantee. |
| Bid | The maximum amount an advertiser is willing to bid under the selected objective and bidding setup. A bid is an auction input, not necessarily the final amount charged. |
| oCPC | Conversion optimization with click billing: the advertiser pays for valid clicks while delivery is optimized toward the selected conversion event. |
| oCPM | Conversion optimization with impression billing: the advertiser pays for impressions while delivery is optimized toward the selected conversion event. |
Measurement
| Term | Plain-English meaning |
|---|---|
| Conversion event | A recorded business action, such as a purchase, lead submission or registration, that an advertiser wants to measure. Check current documentation for supported events and setup. |
| OpenAI Pixel | A browser-side measurement integration that sends supported events from a website. |
| Conversions API (CAPI) | A server-side way to send conversion events from a business system to OpenAI. It can be used with the Pixel when the setup supports both. |
| oppref | OpenAI’s click reference added to an ad landing-page URL. Measurement systems can use it to help connect a later conversion to an eligible ad interaction. Preserve it through redirects if your implementation needs it. |
| Event ID | An identifier used to recognise the same action across measurement channels. Matching event IDs can help deduplicate a conversion sent through both Pixel and CAPI. |
| Attribution window | The time period after an eligible ad interaction in which a conversion can qualify for credit. Check the current reporting settings before comparing results. |
| Event Quality | A diagnostic assessment of whether conversion information from a data source is useful for measurement. It does not predict campaign performance or guarantee that an event will match to an ad. |
Budget and reporting
| Term | Plain-English meaning |
|---|---|
| Daily budget | The average amount OpenAI says a campaign should spend per day over a seven-day period, not a strict daily cap. Check the current pacing rules in Ads Manager. |
| Campaign total budget | The maximum amount you set for a campaign across its scheduled run. Ads Manager paces spend against the remaining amount and schedule. |
| Payment threshold | For self-service card-billed accounts, a billing trigger for when accumulated charges reach a set amount. It is different from a campaign budget and is not an account spending cap. |
| Impressions | The number of times ads were shown, as reported by Ads Manager. |
| CTR | Click-through rate: the proportion of impressions that resulted in clicks. |
| Average CPC / CPM | Average cost per click or per thousand impressions, as reported for the selected campaign and period. |
Terms that are easy to mix up
- Context hint vs. keyword: a hint describes a relevant need or situation; it does not require a person to use the same words and cannot enforce delivery.
- Objective vs. billing: the Conversions objective optimizes toward an event, while the selected billing option may charge for valid clicks or impressions.
- Bid vs. budget: the bid is an auction input; the budget governs campaign spend.
- Event Quality vs. campaign performance: Event Quality diagnoses measurement data. It is not a score for ad effectiveness.
- Payment threshold vs. campaign budget: one determines when billing is triggered; the other limits campaign spend.
Quick answers
Does a Conversions campaign charge me for every conversion?
No. OpenAI’s current documentation describes click or impression billing options for conversion-optimized campaigns. The objective is not itself a per-conversion price.
Are context hints keywords?
No. They provide context about an offer and possible relevance. OpenAI says they are not exact-match keywords or delivery instructions.
Is oppref the same as a UTM parameter?
No. oppref is OpenAI’s click reference for measurement. UTM parameters are campaign tags used by analytics systems. A landing URL may use both, depending on setup.
Does a high Event Quality score guarantee more conversions?
No. OpenAI says Event Quality assesses measurement information and does not predict campaign performance or guarantee ad matching.
